Central New Brighton School actively seeks to provide an environment that is safe.
The school believes in a positive approach to discipline by ensuring that:
- Rules and expectations are clear,
- Staff are positive yet firm and consistent,
- Children achieve success from interesting programmes,
- That children are engaged in constructive play at intervals.
In the class:
Each syndicate has established a “Celebrating Successes” programme. In our office foyer you will be able to see our “STAR” chart. Throughout the year children work toward the “STAR”.
At the end of the year, children who have become CNB STAR's go into to a draw to win bicycles.
House System
Our House System
In the playground we cknowledge positive play -
All children in the school belong to one of our four house groups:
Kea Kiwi Tui Pukeho
We have an orange card system operating (See here for more information). When the duty teacher sees children engaged in positive play, they issue “orange cards". These are collated in class using the house system. Twice a term the house with the most orange cards for positive play go on a mystery bus trip.
Whole school sporting events are also run around our house system, with children gaining points for their house for participation and achievement.

Red Cards
Modifying inappropriate behaviours
Children who bully others or act defiantly may be issued with a “red” card. This will mean that the child will need to go to the timeout room for one lunch hour to reflect on their behaviour. Parents are notified of all red cards issued.
The child will also attend the “wise up” room on Friday, when other children are having privilege play. If they have a red card they will not be eligible to go on the mystery bus trip if their House wins.
Each Friday there is a twenty minute “privilege play" session for children who have had no red cards during the week.
If a child receives three red cards a meeting will be called with parents. This meeting will consider options to help reduce incidences of inappropriate behaviours.
We view modifying ‘undesirable behaviour’ as a partnership between school, home and community.
